Food Poisoning At Risk Groups

Reasons why people are At Risk:

Elderly

They do not have a strong immune response as it decreases with age.

Very Young

They have not developed a strong immune response yet

Ill People

The Immune Response is very adept in fighting one disease at a time.  If an ill person gets food poisoning, the body finds it difficult to fight as it is already concentrating on fighting the first disease

If people are in hospital, the body is concentrating on getting the person well.  If they get food poisoning the immune system could get overwhelmed.

People who are immunocompromised have a weak immune system.  They could be on immunosuppressant drugs due to cancer or transplants.

Pregnant Women

One major bacterial family that affects them is Listeria, although other bacteria cause problems also.  Listeria could be present in unpasteurised Milk or Pates.  That’s why it is important to check food labels to ensure it is pasteurised.
